LOCAL AND LONG-DISTANCE NON-EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION
Launched in 2022 by an experienced transportation provider, Nicholas Kugel, inspiration for Independence Transportation came in working with seniors in a nursing facility. Recognizing that the senior population in Bexar County is projected to reach 40% by 2040, and public transportation solutions cannot accommodate the door-through-door services required to meet the needs of hospital patients and seniors in nursing homes, the decision to create a scalable and reliable solution was obvious.
Over the last several years, Independence Transportation has performed thousands of successful local transports, ambulatory and wheelchair, for seniors and those with mobility issues.
Independence Transportation also accommodates many out-of-area transports for seniors and families needing to attend essential treatments such as oncologists at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, cardiologists at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and many other destinations.
Unlike other services operating as a curb-to-curb service, Independence Transportation is committed to safely escorting patients and clients from hospital, residence, or facility into a clean, comfortable, and ADA-compliant wheelchair accessible vehicle. Upon reaching the destination, our trained staff will escort clients to check-in.
In leveraging years of experience in transporting seniors and those with mobility issues, Independence Transportation continues to build and cultivate strong relationships with area staff, patients, and families. Rather than focusing exclusively on volume and profits, Independence is keenly focused on providing exceptional and timely customer service with the compassion our clients and loved ones deserve.

We are continuously striving to implement effective strategies for enhanced training, integrated technologies, and managerial support and communication. Because we provide local and long-distance transportation, effective planning and communication between dispatch and key facilities is paramount.
We continuously work on enhancing our scheduling and traffic management in an effort to reduce travel and wait times while increasing efficiency. We work to adapt and implement policies and procedures to support our mission, to analyze and advise on transportation issues, evaluate scheduling conflicts, negotiate and correspond with carriers, vendors, and strategic partners.
Dispatchers will receive extensive instruction on using our technological integration systems designed to support our growing scheduling and logistical demands. Dispatchers are responsible for the following:
- Customer intake
- Preparation of daily schedules and trip manifests
- Effective driver management and scheduling
- Trip management and oversight
- Coordination with facility personnel
